Detroit Smart Parking Lab Needed Three-Phase

The Detroit Smart Parking Lab near Detroit's Michigan Central campus needed three-phase power for prototype level-3 EV charging stations. The parking garage where the lab is located did not have the 480V three-phase needed. Installing the EdgeEV50 at the site paved the way for users of the lab to test the next generation of EV charging stations and mobility hardware.

THE CHALLENGE

The Detroit Smart Parking Lab (DSPL) and their partners, NextEnergy, Bosch, Ford Motor Company, ParkRite and Bedrock Properties sought to increase the number of users of the lab by providing power infrastructure to test prototype EV charging and mobility systems. These prototype systems require 480V three-phase power. The parking structure where the lab is located did not have a 480V three-phase service. Estimates from the local utility to upgrade the power service to the building were to costly and lead time estimates for the delivery of a new three-phase transformer were more than two years. Edge Energy was able to provide a simple and cost effective solution that met their needs.

Specific challenges the Edge Energy team faced during this project included:

  • Introducing a new product to local permit authorities and utilities

  • Adapting wiring design to accommodate unique building design and space requirements

  • Working with local electrician and building management to install new breaker in electrical panel.

THE SOLUTION

The Edge Energy team worked with the DSPL to size the needed EdgeEV equipment to meet the available power at the facility and the needed three-phase power of prospective lab users.

The EdgeEV50 provides 50kW of three-phase power by converting available single-phase power in the building. The EdgeEV50 is tied directly into a single-phase breaker in the building's mechanical room via a step-up transformer. It delivers three-phase power to multiple users of the facility.

The small footprint, lower cost, fast delivery and ease of installation allowed the DSPL to exceed timeline expectations and reduce project costs.

THE BENEFITS

COST & TIME: Installation of the EdgeEV50 at the DSPL saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional expense and was delivered and installed in a matter of weeks allowing for the DSPL to recruit to new users to the lab and expand their programing.

REMOTE MONITORING & CONTROL: The EdgeView cloud based platform gives DSPL staff the ability to monitor power usage and control the device, and even restart the device in the event of a power outage, remotely.

PLUG & PLAY: The EdgeEV50's design allows for a quick and easy install. DSPL's local electrician spent less than an hour connecting the unit to the building's infrastructure and powering it up.
